Syracuse
Unesco heritage since 2005, it is the largest Greek city, the most beautiful of all and the only one that was able to challenge Athens. It occupies a very strong position and, as Cicero described it, beautiful from whichever direction you arrive.
It has two ports almost enclosed and embraced by the buildings of the city. Water is its vital element, the first thing you encounter when entering Ortigia and the last thing you can see when leaving the island. Here you can breathe all the scent of the Mediterranean and you can appreciate the enchanting melodies of the waves crashing on the rocks. A space-time gateway between sky and sea is the Umbertino bridge, which connects the island to the mainland. After crossing it, one is immediately greeted by the columns of the Temple of Apollo which reveal the Greek roots of the city. A few minutes from the island of Ortigia it is possible to admire the archaeological park of neapolis which contains famous masterpieces from both the Greek and Roman periods (Greek theatre, Dionysius' ear, cordari cave, Roman amphitheater, Ierone's altar and the latomie) , evidence of the millenary history of the city.
Noto, Modica and Ragusa
Noto is the undisputed capital of Sicilian baroque, a Unesco heritage since 2002 together with the entire Val di Noto. On 11 January 1693, a large part of the eastern part of Sicily was hit by a very violent earthquake. The entire city was razed to the ground and the Duke of Camastra Giuseppe Lanza established the reconstruction on another site, closer to the sea. Various architects from all over the world were called for the occasion. Their work, carried out almost simultaneously, gave Noto a series of large buildings that followed the artistic current of the time: il barocco. Palaces, squares and streets thus formed extremely harmonized scenarios, making the entire city a jewel of absolute prestige.
Modica is known above all for the production of the typical cioccolato of Aztec origin (the best you can find in Sicily).
The historic center of the city, completely rebuilt following the earthquake of 1693, is divided into two large districts: Modica Alta and Modica Bassa. Today walking through the streets of Modica means making a journey steeped in history among late Baroque palaces, churches with majestic steps and great masterpieces.
Ragusa is the southernmost provincial capital of Italy, also a Unesco heritage site. The ancient historic centre takes the name of Ragusa Ibla, with its small houses and narrow streets over which the majestic reigns Cathedral of San Giorgio, the maximum expression of Hyblean Baroque.
Etna and Taormina
Etna has been a UNESCO heritage site since 21 June 2013. No wonder, we are talking about one of the most active volcanoes in the world and the highest in Europe with its 3350 metres. It has a mountain and Mediterranean climate at the same time, an incredible thermal excursion and a geological composition unavailable in other areas of the country. Dozens of vents and micro craters have spread a sort of magical powder on the ground, a mantle of brilliant lava that has produced incredibly unique geological matrices. The vines that have their roots in these lands grow under an inimitable light and climate and can only produce a very original wine, very rich in personality. A volcanic personality.
With its appearance of a medieval village, its ancient Greek soul, the colors and scents of the Mediterranean vegetation, Taormina, also called "the pearl of the Mediterranean", is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the world and the climate of Sicily makes it an ideal destination at any time of the year year. Taormina's secret is to incorporate the different souls of tourism: lovers of nightlife, and more, have miles of beaches at their disposal wonderful and a wide choice of bars, restaurants, night clubs; lovers of cultural tourism will find many examples of Greek art which culminates with the majesty of the Greek theater (second in size in Sicily after that of Syracuse), but also interesting Baroque buildings and Art Nouveau buildings.
Catania and the Riviera of the Cyclops
With the development of the sixties it reached such a level that Catania was called the "Milan of the South".
Located at the foot of Etna, it is a port city on the coast of Sicily with a rich history of cultural heritage from the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, Swabian, Angevin, Aragonese, Spanish eras that you will find in its beautiful monuments. Well known for its dynamism, today's city, mainly from the eighteenth century, is the result of the reconstruction after the strong earthquake of 1693, built in the style Sicilian Baroque which has been declared Unesco World Heritage since 2002.
The Riviera of the Cyclops, north of Catania, is a splendid stretch of coastline which has recently been transformed into a lively summer holiday destination. The beaches are mostly rocky, but perfect for swimming, and the wide choice of restaurants, bars, night clubs and hotels offer many alternatives for spending your free time. It takes its name from some legends born about the huge rocks that emerge from the sea, some of which reach 70 meters in height. In fact, there are several legends about these boulders involving the Cyclops Polyphemus, the giant son of Poseidon. According to a legend, Polyphemus threw these boulders into the sea to express his anger towards Ulysses, whose story was told in Homer's Odyssey.
